What to Visit Near Somova: Monasteries, Niculițel, Enisala

A calm guide to places near Somova: Saon, Celic-Dere, Valea Teilor, Niculițel, and Enisala fortress, from a base on the hill.

When someone comes to us for the first time, the question usually comes after the first trip on the water: “Good, and what do we do tomorrow if we want to go by car?” Around Tulcea, the answer is not only in the Delta. Dobrogea near Somova has monasteries among the hills, villages with short roads, fortress ruins, and old places where the day is better measured in hours, not in sights checked off a list.

Laguna Nuferilor is in Somova, about 10 km west of Tulcea, on a hill above the Somova–Parcheș lake complex. From here you can sleep close to the water, then in the morning leave by car for Saon, Celic-Dere, Niculițel, Valea Teilor, or Enisala. For a stay of two or three nights, the combination works well: one day for the water, one day for roads through Dobrogea, then an evening back on the hill.

Why Start From Somova

Somova is not a place to check off in a hurry. It is more of a base. You have Tulcea close by, the Somova–Parcheș lake complex below the hill, and to the north and east the roads open toward the Dobrogea monasteries. The distances in this article are given from Tulcea, as an easy reference to check on the map. From Somova, you add the short drive into town or choose local variants, depending on that day’s route.

For accommodation, we keep things simple: staying in Somova, near the monasteries - the six rooms means double rooms and triple rooms, with private bathroom, air conditioning, mini-fridge, 81 cm SmartTV, Wi-Fi, and free video-monitored parking. Rooms 5 and 6 have panoramic views, and 3 and 4 have partial views. We do not have a restaurant; breakfast can be added when booking, and for lunch it is more practical to leave room for a stop in Tulcea or along the route.

Saon and Niculițel in One Morning

Saon Monastery is one of the easiest stops for anyone staying in the Tulcea-Somova area. From Tulcea, it is about 11 km to Saon, near Niculițel. The road passes through a landscape of low hills, vineyards, scattered yards, and open land. As a first stop, Saon has the advantage of distance: you can leave after breakfast, stay 40-60 minutes, and still have time for Niculițel before lunch.

Saon is a convent, with a large new church, an old chapel, and its own vineyard. Morning is usually the better time for a settled visit: you enter the courtyard, see the church, pause by the chapel, and leave a few minutes for the paths between the buildings. If you are travelling with older people or children, this order helps, because the first stop is close and clear.

Niculițel is about 25 km from Tulcea and changes the tone of the day. Here you find the early Christian basilica, with a 4th-century martyrion. It is worth linking with Saon because it does not feel like a large detour: you visit the monastery first, then enter the village for the early history. It is a short stop in terms of distance, but it asks for attention, because the important detail is not the size of the place, but its age.

For a morning route, a practical order is Somova, Tulcea, Saon, Niculițel, then return toward Tulcea or continue to another monastery. If you want to avoid driving in the heat, leave at 8:30-9:00. In July and August, the difference between 10:00 and 13:00 is felt especially at stops without much shade.

Celic-Dere and Valea Teilor

Celic-Dere Monastery is about 25 km from Tulcea, in Frecăței commune. It is one of Dobrogea’s known monasteries and deserves separate time if you are interested in religious history. It has a community of nuns, an icon museum, and a collection of old books. For this stop, I would not plan only ten minutes. Leave time for the church, for the museum if it is open when you arrive, and for the monastery courtyard.

If you choose a single monastery for a short day, Celic-Dere may be the right choice especially for someone who wants to see icons and old books, not only the outside of the buildings. The road from Tulcea does not need complicated preparation, but it is good to check the museum visiting hours beforehand. At monasteries, the church and courtyard may have one rhythm, and the museum another.

Valea Teilor Monastery is about 38 km from Tulcea. I mention it because many people look for accommodation close to it and then discover that from the Somova area they can link several roads into one stay. It is not the first stop if you only have half a day, but it fits well into a longer day, with an early start and pauses between villages.

For Valea Teilor, the day should be planned with more space in it. Do not put four monasteries and a fortress on the same list, because you end up driving more than seeing. A more realistic plan is Celic-Dere in the morning, a meal break, Valea Teilor in the afternoon, then return without forcing one last stop. In Dobrogea, distances look small on the map, but the heat and the roads between villages change the rhythm.

Cocoș and the Pace of the Route

Cocoș Monastery often appears in the same conversation as Saon and Celic-Dere. Many people simply call this road the tour of Dobrogea monasteries near Tulcea. If you have a full day, you can combine it with Niculițel and Saon. If you have only a few hours, choose two stops and keep the rest for another day.

I have seen people arrive determined to do everything in a single outing. On the map it looks easy, especially when the kilometres do not seem worrying. On the ground, each place asks for at least a little time: to park, to enter, to ask where you are allowed to go, to put the phone down, and to leave without rushing. It is better to see two monasteries quietly than four with the car door still open.

A Simple Half-Day Route

For an unhurried day, I would leave Somova after breakfast and keep the route close to Tulcea: Saon, Niculițel, Celic-Dere, then return. As reference points, you have about 11 km from Tulcea to Saon, about 25 km from Tulcea to Niculițel, and about 25 km from Tulcea to Celic-Dere. A tour like this is realistic in half a day if you do not enter every museum and do not stretch the meal stops.

  1. Leave Somova at 8:30-9:00, after breakfast or after a short coffee.
  2. First stop at Saon, with 40-60 minutes for the courtyard, church, and chapel.
  3. Second stop at Niculițel, for the early Christian basilica and the 4th-century martyrion.
  4. Third stop at Celic-Dere, where you leave time for the icon museum if the schedule allows.
  5. Return toward Tulcea for lunch or directly toward Somova, depending on the time you finish the visits.

For a larger group, especially families travelling together or a small pilgrimage, it makes sense not to spread the accommodation out. With us, you can book the entire guesthouse for a group / pilgrimage, for up to 14 guests. This makes morning departures easier to organize, and in the evening you no longer have to gather people from several places. Bookings are made with a 50% deposit, and the rest is paid on arrival.

Enisala, When You Want Stone and Lake

Enisala Fortress is about 40 km from Tulcea and roughly 40 minutes by car. It stands on the hill above Lake Razim, with walls left in the wind and an opening toward the Razim-Sinoie complex. After a day of monasteries, Enisala changes the setting: stone, open land, water in the distance, and a short climb up to the walls.

I would put Enisala in a separate day or in a day when you make only one religious stop in the morning. It suits a longer road through Dobrogea, with frequent pauses. There is no need to turn the outing into a heavy schedule. You leave Somova, pass through Tulcea as a reference point, reach the fortress, stay as long as you need for the climb and the view, then keep time to return in daylight.

How to Link the Water and the Monasteries

If you stay two or three nights, I would not choose between the water and the monasteries. I would put them in different days or in half-days. In the morning, when the water is calmer, you can take a morning on the water between visits, on the Somova–Parcheș lake complex. The kayaks are single, with life vest and paddle included. The 0-3 hour interval is 60 RON, 3-6 hours is 90 RON, and the full day is 120 RON.

After lunch, if you have energy, you can leave for a nearby monastery, or keep the drive for the next day. In the monastery day from the 3-day itinerary, the idea is exactly this: you do not load every hour, but leave space for both the road and sitting still. And if you are coming from farther away, the guide on how to get here by car helps you set the route before you leave.

What to Take With You and How to Prepare the Day

  • Clothes suitable for monasteries: shoulders and knees covered. At convents, skirts and scarves are usually available at the entrance if you have forgotten.
  • Water in the car, especially in summer. Between villages, the roads can seem short, but the Dobrogea sun is felt quickly.
  • Comfortable shoes. At Enisala you walk on open ground, and at monasteries it is more pleasant not to hurry.
  • A little cash for donations or museums. You cannot rely on card payment everywhere.
  • A 30-45 minute time margin, for stops, local roads, or a changed museum schedule.

The road to Laguna Nuferilor is paved up to the gate, and the GPS reference is 45.1961, 28.6580. Check-in is from 14:00, check-out until 11:00, so on arrival day you can make a short stop in Tulcea or at Saon before going up toward Somova. For dinner, many guests choose restaurants in Tulcea or Mahmudia. When booking, ask us what the route you want to take looks like; we will tell you what is practical from Somova.

Evening, Back on the Hill

The good part about staying in Somova is that you do not end the day in a parking lot. You return to the hill in the evening, after the monasteries, and catch the Somova-Parcheș lakes from above. If you want to understand the place better, we wrote separately about how the day looks from here in the article about how you return to the hill in the evening, at sunset.

For me, this is the natural way to see the area: not only by boat, not only by car, not only with the map. One day on the water, one day at the monasteries, maybe an afternoon at Enisala. From the same base, without moving your luggage, you begin to understand why Dobrogea near Tulcea does not end at the water’s edge.
