How to Get to the Danube Delta: Real Routes to Somova

How to get to the Danube Delta from Bucharest, Cluj or Iasi by car, train or plane, and what the last 10 km to Somova are like.

When someone asks me how to get to the Danube Delta, my first question is different: where do you want to sleep on the first evening? The Delta does not begin in the same place for everyone. For some it means Tulcea, for others Murighiol, Sulina or Sfantu Gheorghe. For us, home is Somova, 10 km west of Tulcea, on the hill above the Somova–Parcheș lake complex, in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve.

I am writing this guide for someone coming for the first time who wants to know concrete things: how many kilometers there are, which way to go, how long it takes without inflated stories, and what to do if you arrive in the evening. It is not a hard road, but it is a long road from Bucharest and a very long one from Cluj. If you plan it well, you arrive with energy for the first morning on the water.

Before You Leave

The GPS for Laguna Nuferilor is 45.1961, 28.6580. The road is paved all the way to the gate. The guesthouse is in Somova, Tulcea County, not in Tulcea city, so leave another 10 km in your plan after you leave Tulcea heading west. Usually it is about 12 minutes by car, if you do not catch local traffic or make a short stop at a shop.

Check-in is from 14:00, check-out is at 11:00. If you see that you will arrive later than you estimated, call us. The phone is answered at any time, and our number is the simplest place to check before you enter the last stretch. In the evening, after Tulcea, keep the coordinates on your phone, not only the name of the guesthouse.

Before leaving, keep the booking confirmation, phone number, address and coordinates in the same place. If you are coming with children or luggage for several days, plan your stops before entering Dobrogea. For things to pack in the car, I separated the list in what to take with you to the Danube Delta, so here we can stay with the road and the timing.

Bucharest - Tulcea - Somova

From Bucharest, I use the A2 / DN22 route: A2 toward Constanta, then DN22 toward Tulcea. It is about 310 km to Tulcea and, with normal driving, about 4h 30m without long stops. With a coffee, fuel and a short break, count closer to 5 hours until you enter Tulcea, then another 10 km to Somova.

On the A2, the biggest risk is not the road, but the time you leave. On Friday afternoons and Sundays in summer, seaside traffic gathers. If you can leave in the morning, the road feels more settled. After you leave the motorway, DN22 asks for attention through villages, at entrances, at crossings and in places where trucks keep the pace lower.

After Harsova, the Danube floodplain opens on the right. The light changes, low fields appear, then dikes, reed belts and roads leading toward villages. If you are coming for the first time, keep time for a short stop before entering Tulcea. It is better to reach Somova with a clear head than straight from the rhythm of the motorway.

In Tulcea, keep the direction toward the western exit in mind. If you need shopping, a pharmacy, fuel or charging, stop in the city, because after that you quickly enter the road to Somova. It is not worth circling through the center if all you want is to reach the guesthouse. The last stretch is short, and the evening goes more easily when the bags are already down.

Cluj - Tulcea, Without Illusions

From Cluj to Tulcea there are about 620 km, and the route I would take is through Brasov - Buzau. On a good day, we are talking about roughly 9 hours of driving. That means leaving early, breaks planned in advance and an evening without a big plan after arrival. If you leave at 7:00, it is realistic to arrive in Somova around dinner, not at lunch.

For the road from Transylvania, divide the day into driving sections of 2h 30m - 3h. The first break can be before or after Brasov, the second after you pass Buzau, and the last one close to Tulcea if you feel your attention dropping. I would not put a water trip on arrival day. You arrive, take down the bags and leave the plan for the morning.

I do not put the train from Cluj to Tulcea on the list of realistic options for a short holiday. Connections are difficult, it takes a long time and it leaves you tired before the part with water, villages and shorter roads begins. For anyone coming from Transylvania, your own car or a rental car remains the option with the fewest compromises.

Iasi - Tulcea

From Iasi, the road is shorter: about 210 km and around 4 hours, through DN15D + DN24. It does not look like much on the map, but there are sections where the average speed drops. Here the distance matters less than patience through villages. For a family, the road works better with a break halfway, before tiredness appears in the last few dozen kilometers.

The advantage of Iasi is that you arrive the same day without losing the day on the road. If you leave in the morning, you can enter Tulcea at lunch, do some shopping if needed, then climb toward Somova. If you arrive before 14:00, use the remaining hour in Tulcea or on the route; check-in remains the landmark that keeps the first day orderly.

If you leave Iasi after work, calculate arrival in Somova around 20:00-21:00, depending on stops. Let us know your estimated time before you enter the last 10 km, especially if you need directions at the gate. On a summer evening you may still catch light on the hill, but do not rely on that for orientation.

Train and Plane

The train from Bucharest to Tulcea exists as a practical but slow option. You leave from Bucharest Nord, change at Medgidia, then reach Tulcea after 6-7 hours. There is no direct train. If you come alone or do not want to drive, it can be a good choice. If you come with luggage, children or plans to move around nearby, the car gives you more freedom.

When arriving by train, the part that needs to be thought through in advance is Tulcea - Somova. It is only 10 km, but it is simpler to know from home how you will cover them: taxi, rental car or a transport solution discussed ahead of time. If you want to visit Saon, Niculitel, Celic-Dere or Enisala during the same holiday, do not rely on improvising every day.

By plane, things are simpler than they seem: for most people, Bucharest Otopeni (OTP) remains the practical hub, then you continue by train or rental car. Tulcea Airport (TCE) is closer to the city, about 14 km away, but do not treat it as a sure option without checking flights first. I would not build my holiday only around that option without a confirmed schedule.

Electric Car and Useful Stops

If you come with an electric car, you have options in Tulcea and with us. In the city you can find public chargers at Lidl and Kaufland, useful before returning or after a day of drives through the county. At Laguna Nuferilor there is also an 11 kW, Type 2 charger in the iHUNT network.

Our charger is public, outdoors and paid. Anyone can charge without entering the courtyard. For a Bucharest - Somova road, I would leave well charged, use Tulcea as a safety net and leave the evening charge for the moment when you no longer have bags to move.

The Last 10 km

From Tulcea toward Somova you enter DJ229. It is about 10 km, around 12 minutes, with paved road all the way to the gate. Here the rhythm changes: the city intersections stay behind, low houses appear, gardens, courtyards, local signs and the climb toward the hill. It is not a complicated road, but it is worth doing without hurry, especially after several hours of driving.

If you arrive after sunset, keep the GPS on the coordinates. By day, orientation is easier, because the hill shows you quite quickly where you are climbing. In the last part of the road, the lake area opens below the hill; I wrote more about this view in the view from Somova hill. For photos, early morning and evening are the moments when the water is clearest from above.

After You Arrive

I would keep the first evening in Somova simple: take down the bags, breathe for a while in the courtyard, see what light lies over the lakes and choose slowly what to do the next day. We have free video-monitored parking, a garden of about 800 m², a hot tub, a grill with pergola and a fishing spot down by the bank. Dinner can be sorted in Tulcea, in Mahmudia or with the things you brought for the grill.

For the next day, the car opens short routes around Tulcea. Saon Monastery is about 11 km from Tulcea, near Niculitel. Niculitel, with its 4th-century early Christian basilica, is about 25 km away, and Celic-Dere Monastery is also about 25 km, toward Frecatei. Valea Teilor climbs to about 38 km. For Enisala Fortress, calculate about 40 km and around 40 minutes by car from Tulcea. From Somova, you first add the 10 km to the city.

For the water, you have two good directions. If you want a slow rhythm close to the bank, you can take our kayaks, all single, with life jacket and paddle included. Rental has three intervals: 0-3h = 60 RON, 3-6h = 90 RON, and the full day is 120 RON. The kayaks are single; two people do not go in the same kayak. If a child cannot paddle alone, we discuss the boat trip. For a longer route in the Delta, the boat trip is added to the booking, and we choose the route together. For a plan set across days, I wrote separately about three full days in the Delta.

If you have decided that Somova is the right base for your first visit, look in advance at the six rooms with a view. Rooms 5 and 6 have panoramic views, rooms 3 and 4 have partial views, and rooms 1 and 2 have a terrace. Booking is made online with a 50% deposit, the rest on arrival, and the minimum stay is 2 nights. Prices are shown in RON, and cancellation is free 14 days before.
