Somova-Parcheș Kayak Itinerary: 12 km on the Channels

Kayak rental in the Danube Delta: a 12 km Somova-Parcheș route from Somova, with start times, wind, birds, prices, and an unhurried return.

At Somova, the water does not show itself all at once. You see it first between houses, then lower down, like a sheet stretched between reeds and low hills. The Somova-Parcheș route is good for a first kayak outing because it does not ask for hurry, it does not ask for strength, and it gives you time to learn how the paddle sounds when it enters the water cleanly.

We recommend it especially for two people or among friends: each in their own kayak, with the same rhythm, with short pauses for water, photographs, and quiet. In 3-4 hours you cover 12 km out and back, see the narrow channel, the opening toward the lake, and the return, where the wind tells you how slowly or quickly you get back.

The Route in Brief

The classic route is Somova-Parcheș-return: 12 km total, 3-4 hours at a relaxed pace. The departure is from the Somova–Parcheș lake complex, not from the guesthouse yard. For those who have paddled before and want a full day on the water, the extended Somova-Mahmudia option is 18 km one way and needs about 7 hours in total, with pauses planned ahead, not added at random.

  • Recommended distance for a first outing: 12 km out and back.
  • Realistic time: 3-4 hours, with a short pause in the Parcheș area.
  • The kayaks are single kayaks; each adult paddles their own kayak.
  • Included equipment: life jacket and paddle.
  • Good rhythm: 35-45 minutes of paddling, then 5 minutes of rest on the water.

For the 12 km route, the 3-6h interval is the best fit: 90 RON / kayak. If you go out only to get used to the kayak, 0-3h costs 60 RON, and for a full day, the kayak costs 120 RON. Availability and time-slot details are on the page where you can reserve your kayak here.

As time markers, a 07:00 departure usually brings you back before 11:00, with room to wash the equipment and change clothes. A 17:30 departure works in summer only if you know the sunset time and do not leave the return for darkness. There is no lighting on the channels, and reading the banks becomes harder after the light drops.

Where You Enter the Water and When You Leave

In the morning, departure has a different patience than in the evening. Between 06:30 and 10:30 the water is usually calmer, birds move along the edges, and the light comes low through the reeds. In the evening, between 17:30 and 21:00, the channel cools down and you hear the frogs, the village dogs, and a boat now and then in the distance more clearly.

Before you go down to the water, one minute of orientation helps: from above, on the hill, you see where you enter the channel, then where the water widens toward Parcheș. That perspective explains why we wrote separately about the view from the hill toward Somova and the Delta. On the water, things become simpler: stay close to the edge, let fast boats pass, and do not cross open water without a reason.

The exact place where you enter the water is set according to the wind, the water level, and the chosen hour. If you come from Tulcea, Somova is about 10 km west, on paved road up to the Laguna Nuferilor gate, at coordinates 45.1961, 28.6580. From there we confirm the time and the way down toward the Somova–Parcheș lake complex, so you do not leave on the water without a clear return point.

Km 0-2: The Tight Channel

The first 2 km are the best for getting used to the kayak. The channel is tighter, the reeds cut some of the wind, and the kayak starts going straight after the first 200 m of paddle corrections. Here you have the best chance of seeing the common kingfisher, Alcedo atthis, shooting out from a low branch. The little egret stays farther away, with its neck pulled in, and the grey heron leaves slowly, usually along the line of the channel.

In the first minutes, do not hurry to take out your phone. Rest the paddle on the edge of the kayak, check that the life jacket is tight, and watch the water: where it wrinkles, where it is darker, where leaves or reed stems gather. These signs show you the current better than a map kept open on the screen.

If there are several of you, go in a loose line, two or three kayak lengths apart. This way you do not hit each other’s paddles, you do not push each other in bends, and you have space to stop when a bird appears. The person with the slowest rhythm stays in front; the group adjusts to them.

Km 2-4: Toward Parcheș

After the first 2 km, the water opens gradually toward the Parcheș area. Here you feel the wind more clearly, especially if it comes from the west or northwest. Fallen trunks appear along the banks, good places for the European pond turtle, which stays in the sun until you get too close. Swans keep more distance; if they have young, you go well around them and move without noise.

Motorboats can appear in this area. There are not many, but they come quickly and leave a wave. When you hear an engine, move toward the sheltered side, close to the reeds, with the bow facing the wave. On a wide channel, do not stay in the middle for photographs. A boat passes in a few seconds; a phone dropped in the water stays there.

Between km 3 and 4, the first temptations for shortcuts usually appear, especially when you see open water to the side. Do not enter secondary channels if you have not set the route beforehand. Some end in reeds, others take you to a place where the wind hits directly, and the return to the main route uses up time and water from your bottle.

Km 4-6: The Turning Point

At km 4 you are already level with the village of Parcheș and you enter the part where the outing turns from a walk into a decision. If the weather is calm, you can continue to the turning point at km 6. If the wind is in your face and you feel that every 100 m asks for effort, turning back earlier is a good choice.

The best pause is short: water, a small snack, two photographs, and a check of the wind direction. Use the toilet before departure, at the guesthouse; there are no facilities on the route. If an urgent need appears in Parcheș, ask in the village, but do not set off relying on easy stops.

A practical marker: at half of your reserved time you should already be turned around or in the turning maneuver. For the 3-6h interval, if you left at 07:00, 09:30 is the moment when you honestly check the remaining distance. It is not only the kilometres that matter; it also matters whether the wind has grown, whether the group is tired, and whether you still have drinking water.

The Return and the Wind

In a kayak, the return tells the truth about the day. In the morning you can leave on flat water and come back with wind in your face. West and northwest are the harder directions for this route, because they can push against you on the return. Southeast helps more, especially when it comes weak and steady.

If the wind passes 15 km/h on the return, the time can double. If the forecast shows more than 25 km/h, stay on shore and we move the outing to another interval, when possible. At junctions, where channels meet, the current feels stronger; there you keep your direction, do not paddle diagonally across the join, and do not stop in the middle.

Check the forecast the evening before and once again in the morning. Do not look only at air temperature; for kayaking, wind direction and speed are more important. A warm day with west wind can be more tiring than a cool, calm morning with low mist over the water.

Equipment, Costs, and Alternatives

For two people, the usual option means two single kayaks for 3-6h: 180 RON total, with life jacket and paddle included. We work with single kayaks, not double kayaks. If you come with a child who cannot paddle a single kayak alone, the boat trip is more suitable, on a route chosen together and added to the booking.

  1. If the wind is weak and the light is low, a 06:30-07:00 departure gives you an unhurried rhythm.
  2. If west or northwest wind appears above 15 km/h during the return interval, shorten the route and stay close to the reeds.
  3. If the forecast gets close to 25 km/h or goes above it, choose another hour, the hot tub, a walk through Tulcea, or a boat trip added to the booking.

Take water, a cap, a thin long-sleeved top, and footwear that can get wet. The phone goes in a waterproof case or in a dry bag brought by you, not in a pocket. If you start in the evening, also take a light layer for the return; on the water, after sunset, the air cools faster than on the hill.

For situations where you are looking for a double kayak, we explained separately the option with children (double kayak), including when it makes sense to use a partner in the area. For adults who have not paddled before, the practical difference is simple: in a single kayak each person controls direction, and the group can stop often without depending on the same boat.

Photographs Without Rush

Photographs come out best at first light or in the last hour before sunset. Then the water does not shine hard, birds move along the edges, and the reeds have outline, not only green patches. The simple rule: paddle down, kayak left to float, camera at your chest with the strap fastened. Do not stand up for the frame and do not turn the kayak suddenly after a bird.

For the common kingfisher, patience beats zoom. You usually see it as movement, not as a portrait: a blue line over the water, a stop on a branch, then flight again. For wider frames, look for the curves of the channel and the reed edges. We also have photos from the channels, if you want to get a sense of the light before booking.

After the Outing

After 12 km on the water, the good part is not getting back in the car for another hour. At Laguna Nuferilor, bookings are for a minimum of 2 nights, and the kayak can be added separately, depending on availability. For mornings with an early departure, Room 5 has 23 m² and a panoramic view toward the lakes.

If you stay two nights, the route fits naturally between check-in at 14:00 and check-out at 11:00: you arrive, settle in, check the wind, go out in the morning or evening, and leave the second day for rest, birds, or a boat trip in the Danube Delta, on a route chosen together. For orientation before departure, the article about the birds you see on the channel also helps.

The room booking is made with a 50% deposit online, through Revolut Pay, and the rest is paid on arrival. Breakfast is optional extra, 75 RON / person / night. If you arrive with an electric car, there is a public Type 2 charger outside, 11 kW, in the iHUNT network, paid separately; you also have public options at Lidl or Kaufland in Tulcea.

Frequently asked questions

I am a beginner: can I do this route?
Yes. The Somova-Parcheș route is suitable for a first outing if the weather is calm and you stay on the 12 km out-and-back route. The first 2 km are more protected by reeds, and after the first few hundred metres most people find their rhythm.
Do I wear a life jacket on the route?
Yes, the life jacket is always worn on the water and is included in the rental. You close it before getting into the kayak and do not open it for photographs or pauses.
Will the phone stay dry?
Only if you keep it in a waterproof case or in a dry bag. Do not keep it in your pocket, because a wave from a boat or one wrong paddle stroke is enough for a serious soaking.
What do I do if the wind changes?
Go on the sheltered side of the channel, close to the reeds, and shorten the route if the return becomes hard. Above 25 km/h, the outing is postponed; above 15 km/h on the return, the time can increase a lot.
Is there a toilet on the route?
There is no arranged toilet on the water. Use the toilet at the guesthouse before departure, and if a need appears in the Parcheș area, stop in the village and ask locally.
Can I fish from the kayak?
Yes, if you have the permit needed for recreational fishing and check the current rules before departure. From the kayak, stay close to the edges, do not block the channel, and keep the life jacket closed.
Do I need a double kayak for a child?
We have single kayaks. A child goes out with a kayak only if they can paddle a single kayak alone; otherwise, the boat trip is the more suitable option.
